The 'village' want both Dani and her bf for their breeding potential and nothing more. They brought them there with the conclusion predetermined - the coincidence of her need for family is incidental. 'Traditional family values' have been powerful forces of good and evil in history; the development of societies but also the creation of the most effective criminal structures and cults. They can give her what she wants but they must nurture her more because she must produce the child. There is nothing to suggest they would not dispose of her once her breeding potential has been exhausted.

I'm a little late in commenting so I'm not sure if you'll notice this but as a cult survivor myself, I appreciate this video and explanation so much. I was born and raised by people who were recruited into the cult so for many years I knew little outside of its parameters of thought. While it was a bible-based cult, the tactics were all the same. At the time of its inception in the 80s, nearly all of the recruits were Gen-X teenagers from dysfunctional and abusive households. It was no wonder people like my parents were so susceptible to believing the cult when they were told how evil the world outside was. Anyone looking in would think we were just another suburban church with a warm and welcoming community with many finding great happiness and love upon joining. They thought they found their happy ending. Until shit would get real. Real fast. By the 90s most of those teens grew up and had families within the cult. Soon the very childhood dysfunction and abuse they sought to escape was reframed as child training to be further perpetuated. The very trauma that compelled them to seek out the cult continued in the next lot of children. The slightest things could be utilised by those in charge to inflict extreme sanctions upon adult and child alike. There were public humiliations, deliverances, relationships forced apart, forced marriage, and excommunications alike. This was no happy ending. Time outside the cult has shown me that while those years were certainly my worst, there's still a lot left to be desired with how things are in the world right now. We need to continue the fight for things like equality, better grassroots communities, healthier communication and emotional expression being championed, a sense of freedom of individuality that allows people to contribute greatly within their communities rather than the selfish individualism so often pushed, and a vigilance that prevents harmful actions being perpetuated in the name of belief. Society's flaws drive vulnerable people into the arms of abusive structures, be it a romantic partner, toxic friendship, or a cult. Continuing such a toxic cycle does not make for a happy ending.

Midsommar a24. CinemaSins: Everything Wrong With Hereditary 30 mins later Me: Sooo. when is the video supposed to start. That thumbnail gave me the creeps.😨. Midsommar subtitle. Midsommar free. After the powerhouse that was Hereditary, I was eager to see how writer-director, Ari Aster, would follow up his amazing debut. Midsommar is an ambitious second film that carries over some of what worked with his initial film while having a different feel overall.
Like Hereditary, this film is carried by a wonderful lead actress who goes through an entire cavalcade of emotion. Florence Pugh was an actress I was unaware of, but following this film I am definitely going to keep my eye out for her. She was jaw-dropping. She conveyed grief and sadness so vigorously it almost became hard to watch.
One thing that was interesting about this film is that unlike Hereditary, which was unpredictable the entire way through, in this film the outcome is fairly apparent. It is a horror movie about a bunch of people visiting a strange place; you kinda know what is going to happen to them. But what kept my interest, aside from the great presentation, is how Aster presents his characters.
They are believable. Especially the boyfriend character. They aren't over-the-top; they are real people. And that makes what happens to them all the more heartbreaking. Aster really likes to put his characters through the ringer emotionally. There are moments in this film where his characters are so emotionally-devastated part of you just wants to reach into the screen and put your hand on their shoulder.
The presentation of the film is notable as well. What stuck out to me is the amazing cinematography, score, and lighting. Having a horror movie set during the day is a unique decision and it benefited the film greatly. There are so many breathtaking shots in this film that it almost becomes more mesmerizing than scary. Midsommar lures you in slowly and looks innocent at first, much like the cult of this film.
If I had any complaints it would be about the last 20 minutes or so. As mentioned previously, the plot is somewhat predictable, and that is fine for a movie like this because if anything, this just increases the dread the audience feels for the characters. The problem I had with the last little chunk of the film is that the two remaining characters left were both rendered mute. This was a good way to get the audience to focus on the creepy visuals, but with completely silent protagonists it becomes kind of hard to relate to what is happening on screen.
The characters are written so well that when they no longer speak I feel left in the dark. And since the plot is kind of predictable, the ending feels a little too slow for me. I think Aster could have achieved the same feeling in the end if the pacing was a bit quicker. This is another complaint I have: the movie may be a little too long for its own good. Hereditary had such a breakneck pace that this may be jarring to some.
Still, what makes this film compelling is its characters and the journey they go on. Aster is a king at mixing relationship drama with disturbing ideas and images. His films really stick with you more than most horror films because of this, and I am very eager to see what messed up thing he cooks up next.
Midsommar is a unique experience and very much worth watching. Although it is a bit uneven in some places, like pacing and the occasional cheesy moment, it is so crazy and strange that it can become impossible to look away.

Great video! I had a pretty similar reaction to the film, though the white supremacy aspect went over my head. I just saw the fact that the cult recognized Dany's dependency and capitalized on it. Meanwhile, the film used 80's slasher mentality (where the audience is perfectly ok with the insufferable protagonists dying) to make the audience glaze over the fact that no one deserved to die.

I feel like not enough people talk about the fact that Christian got raped. And it feels like Dani was meant to find him. Yes Christian was terrible to Dani and there were parts of the movie that felt cathartic (despite recognizing how messed up the cult was, seeing a group of women holding each other and crying together did something) but the whole thing of the cult and Pele supporting Dani had an undercurrent of manipulation.

Midsommar trailer. Midsommar movie review. I love how they make you feel you are in the middle of no where with extreme cultists And they have no restraints in what they do No one can tell them anything and whoever is born there is stuck and has no connection to the outside except only for a special mission of recruitment or sacrifices cults to a T. Just like how she sees her mom at the end of the competition, isnt the girl she bumps into her sister? When she committed suicide there was yellow vomit on her shirt and the girl throws up but we dont see her on the ground, like she disappears? Is there directors commentary on this.

This video is a high production value remix of the you are not immune to propaganda garfield meme and i for one do adore this. Happy Beltane everyone.
